ANTI-CHINESE OUTBURSTS
INDONESIAN MINISTER’S EXPLANATION (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) BATAVIA, June 18. The Indonesian Minister of Information (Mohammed Natsir) asserted that the recent anti-Chinese outbursts in the Tangerang area resulted from the Allies forcing the Republican Army to leave a four mile deep belt or “No Man’s Land” in the are*. It was impossible to maintain order without Republican troops there. The Minister, after his return from a tour of investigation, said that in- ( complete casualty lists showed that 140 Chinese had been kiled and 40 were missing. Two thousand were under protective custody. The Indonesian Government had undertaken to compensate the Chinese for the destruction of about 100 houses. Eight Indonesians who were caught red-handed killing Chinese were executed on the spot.
