PUBLIC SERVICE “TEMPORARIES”
SATISFACTION WITH SOLUTION
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. June 14. "Considerable satisfaction is being expressed throughout the Public Service at the impending solution of what has been called ’the temporaries problem’—the presence in the Public Service of many thousands of temporary employees without any real status,” said the general secretary of the Public Service Association (Mr J. Turnbull) to-day. “The Government has recently expressed itself as willing to make the necessary amendments t<s the legislation, as desired by the Public Service Association and the Public Service Commissioner to give permanent status to a great majority of temporaries.” Commenting that the Government’s decision was the culmination of-a long campaign waged by the Public Service Association on behalf of the temporaries. Mr Turnbull recalled that the commissioner's 1945 report had shown that temporary employee* numbered approximately 17,500. compared with 13.000 permanent employees, and added: “It will take time for the process of absorption to be completed, and no doubt administrative problems will arise. The association feels, however. that its plan had covered most of the possible contingencies and that the transition to permanent service will proceed with a minimum of friction and delay."
