FANCIERS’ SHOW
AWARDS AT ASHBURTON With competitors from Blenheim to Invercargill, the Ashburton Fanciers Society held the best winter show in its history at Ashburton yesterday Entries totalled 743, compared with 556 last year, the biggest increase being in game and ducks, which were a feature of the show. Other sections strongly supported were: Hamburgs, Orpingtons, and Anconas, in which many particularly good specimens of the respective breeds were exhibited. The profit from the show will be given to the building fund of the Ashburton Returned Services’ Association. The dog section, for which there are 75 entries, and the cats (25 entries) will be judged this morning, and a children s pet parade will be held this afternoon. Three New Zealand championships were awarded as follows: • Black Orpington, standard classes: G. H. Nicoll (Ashburton). Ancona, standard classes: A. J. Tate (Tinwald). Utility Langshan: C. L. Burt (Christchurch). South Island championship awards were won as follows: —Any other variety, utility poultry: D. R. Crawford (Lagmhor). Black Leghorn, standard classes: J. D. Gobbe (Christchurch). Utility Khaki Campbell, drake or duck: D. R. Crawford. Yellow Norwich canary, flighted class: W. M. Shand (Christchurch). Yel-low-winger budgerigar, open classes: Mrs H. M. Hewland (Christchurch). South Island junior championship for light breeds, bantam, femgle: R. J. Renner (Ashburton).
Cups Awarded Cups were awarded as follows: A. L. Jones Cup for best bird in show: G. H. Nicoll (Ashburton). Davis Cup, for best cockerel or pullet in show: G. H. Nicoll. Peter Donald Memorial Cup, for best Black Orpington: G. H. Nicoll. G. Bundy Memorial Cup, best bird in standard poultry: A. J. Tate (Tinwald). John Grigg Cup, best utility poultry: G. H. Nicoll. Orpington cup, best Black Orpington, opposite sex: G. H. Nicoll. Ancona cup, best Ancona: A J. Tate. Minorca cup, best utility Minorca * cockerel or pullet: Mrs L. Holborough (Woodend). Hamburg cup. best Hamburg: R. F. Smith (Methven). Leghorn cup, best utility White Leghorn: O. Morris (Ashburton). Australorp cup, best Australorp: Mitchell and McKie (Christchurch). Bantam cup, best bantam: W. gummings (Christchurch). Suttie cup, nest bantam, opposite sex: A. J. Jeffery (Christchurch). Game cup, best bird in game section: J. M. Digby (Ashburton). Canary cup, for best cock canary: A. Langdon (Westerfield): best hen: W. M. Shand (Christchurch). Yorkshire flighted cock and hen and unflighted cock and hen: A. Langdon.
