MAGISTRATE’S COURT
FRIDAY (Before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M.) POSSESSION OF PISTOL Francis Noel Harkness (Mr J. K. Moloney) was charged with unlawfully being in possession of a weapon, with unlawfully importing a weapon. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Detective-Sergeant A. A. Herron stated that Harkness arrived back in New Zealand last December, and had landed an automatic pistol without a permit. He had carried it in the country without a licence. Harkness was involved in a shooting incident, and at present was serving a term of imprisonment. The police were not asking tor a further sentence, but wanted an order that Harkness should forfeit the weapon. Harkness was convicted and discharged on both charges, an order for the forfeit of the pistol being made by the Magistrate. REMANDED IN CUSTODY Harry Gordon Robins, a labourer, aged 57. pleaded guilty to a charge of being idle and disorderly in that he had insufficient visible means of support. Sub-Inspector G. J. Paine stated that the defendant had not been in any trouble for a number of years. The Magistrate ordered that he be remanded in custody for a week. TRAFFIC OFFENCES The following penalties were imposed in traffic cases brought by the police:—parking over fire-plug: John Raymond Anderson. 10s. Driving without due care and attention: William Tinnis Anderson, £2. Unligbted bicycle: Brian Couling, Ips. Failing to notify change of ownership: Kenneth Percival Little. ss. bailing to give way to right: Raymond Phillip Sturge, costs only. No tail-light: Gordon Richard Austin Ward, ss.
