U.S. “AGITATION” ON PALESTINE
“I am extremely grateful to the United States fop taking part in the Palestine Commission," said Mr Bevin, “The agitation in the United States, particularly in New York, for 100,000 Jews to be admitted to Palestine—and I do not want Americans to misunderstand me—is because they do not want too many of them in New York. “The financial issues involved in the Palestine business are tremendous. The British Exchequer cannot carry the burden. We cannot take on another £200,000,000 expenditure in
Palestine, and that is what is really involved. ’ Mr Bevin said that he had studied the problem of devaloping Palestine, and he concluded that there must be a joint division and that land would have to be publicly owned, leased qut-and allocated. The Arabs life could not be raised io a par with the Jews if their land were taken. “I do not believe in exclusively racial States. They want a Palestine State in Palestine. That is what I am striving to do. It is taking patience and work to accomplish," continued Mr Bevim
