BRITISH POLICY IN PALESTINE
Bevin Speaks At Labour
Conference
CONCERN ABOUT RELATIONS
WITH SOVIET
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) LONDON. June 12. “If we put 100,000 Jews into Palestine to-morrow I would have to put another division of British troops there, and 1 am not prepared to do it." said the Foreign Secretary (Mr Ernest Bevin) addressing the Labour Party Conference at Bournemouth.
* Mr Bevin spoke about relations with Russia and the difficulties lie had experienced in trying to reach agreement with Moscow. He assured Mr Stalin and Mr Molotov that Britain was not dividing Europe.
Mr Bevin spoke after several delegates had supported resolutions criticising the Government’s foreign policy, regretting the deterioration in relations with Russia, and calling for a reorganisation of the Diplomatic Corps.
When replying, Mr Bevin asked the delegates to exercise patience. “I cannot be expected, in 10 months, to solve every human problem thrown up by the war,” he said. You cannot build a new world in 10 months. Give me four or five years and see what results can be produced. I have taken on a dimcult task, but I shall do my best. If, before I leave oflicc. I can carry world organisation a stage further, I. will be very happy. Many of the fruits of present labours will not reveal themselves for from 20 to 25 years.” A resolution criticising the Government’s foreign policy was withdrawn, and a resolution dealing with relations with Russia was lost on a show of hands.
