ROYAL COMIC OPERA COMPANY
Sir,—The J. C. Williamson Company advertises its touring company as the Royal Comic Opera Company Can you tell me when and by whom the appellation Royal was conferred on this company. or if anyone can use the title except the armed forces, who have to have the honour bestowed on them by the King?—Yours, etc., CURIOUS. May 30. 1946. [Mr John Farrell, representative of J C. Williamson, Ltd., said that the name Royal Comic Opera Company had been used off and on by his company for 40 to 50 years. It originated in the days of Nellie Stewart. Florrie Young, Grace Palo 4 fa, and George Lauri, and was used to distinguish Royal Comic Opera productions from ordinary musical comedy* shows. In any case the use of the prefix Royal was not uncommon throughout New Zealand, the word being claimed by agricultural shows, insurance companies. and many hotels and restaurants.]
