CITY’S TRAFFIC PROBLEMS
u CLOSE ATTENTION FROM DEPARTMENT ” SQUARE REORGANISATION BEING CONSIDERED An assurance that the traffic committee of the Christchurch City Council and lhe staff of the traffic department were giving close attention to the traffic control problems mentioned in a leading article in “The Press” yesterday, was given in an interview by Cr. C. D. W. L. Sheppard, chairman of the traffic committee. A close study of the parking problem was now being made, said Cr. Sheppard, and before long the committee would present to the council for consideration a complete revision of the parking regulations in the city. One of the most important questions, as “The Press” pointed out, was the control of traffic in Cathedral 'Square, said Cr. Sheppard. Many months ago the committee, after a conference with the Trdmway Board, brought forward a scheme for the reorgariisation of traffic in the Square, and this was submitted to the board for its consideration. It was hoped to have a further conference with the board on the subject this month. In the meantime the reorganisation of the Square was in abeyance, and the Metropolitan Licensing Authority, in authorising the starting points for the new bus routes, had made it clear that they would be subject to revision when the reorganisation scheme was being put into effect. Cr. Sheppard added that the traffic department had received from the Junior Chamber of Commerce a proposed plan for the reorganisation of traffic control in the square and the various points suggested would receive consideration.
