CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW
SCHEME FOR SOUTH ISLAND AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION GIVES SUPPORT A proposal to hold a South Island championship show in the three years of the five-year cycle in which the Royal Show would not be held in the south was approved yesterday by the general committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The committee’s decision followed the report by Mr R. T. McMillan of a conference in Dunedin, where representatives of Otago, Southland, and Canterbury discussed the proposal. The Otago Agricultural and Pastoral So* ciety had suggested the formation of a Highland and Agricultural Society of the South Island. “The meeting was unanimous that a new organisation should not be set up, but that the administration of the' shows be in the hands of a small committee composed of representatives of the three subscribing organisations,” said Mr McMillan “It was agreed that the funds would be used for paying freight charges of exhibitors travelling from outside the province in which the show was held.” he a'dded “The question of providing finance was discussed, and the Canterbury representatives suggested that a levy on gate takings and entry fees would not be equitable, but that a flat rate of contribution of £lOO to establish the scheme would be oreferable. It was agreed that the subsidv would be available to stock travelling from .other centres. “The suggestion of using the word ‘Highland’ was not favoured, nor was the idea of sending pine bands fro-’ the various centres to the show location. The Otago rer‘r<=>sentntives emphasised that their suggestions were n»-»+ : r».+pn/4nd '•nnflirf the interests of the Royal Agricultural Society.” It was recommended, said Mr McMillan, that the association agree to the scheme, that £ 100 he made ava' l when tyv the oornmitfee. an*’ that th° a«'-'v»i''tin*' apnoint representatives: tn the com mittoe to administer the scheme and t.h*» fund.
