Officers of the Horticultural Division of the Department of Agriculture at Hastings are seeking information about a white-fringed beetle which has made its appearance in New Zealand and was first noticed in the gardens in the Civic square. Hastings. The beetle bears the name of Pantomorous lencoloma, and closely resembles the grass grub. It is creamy-white, and the adult is a brown beetle with a white stripe down the back. The insect is said to be most destructive, and every endeavour is being made to k*op It in check. Last week 254 places in the Dominion obtained their quotas of national savings, this being the highest number of successes recorded during May. AU the principal centres reached their objectives, and every postal district subscribed Its full quota, the investments in many cases being appreciably in excess of the allotted amounts. In the Blenheim. Greymouth, Nelson. Oamaru. and Westport districts all areas obtained their individual quotas. -(P.S.S.)
