MONTGOMERY IN CAIRO

“STUDYING MILITARY PROBLEMS”

LONDON, June 11. Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery arrived at Cairo after a flight in which he circled over Benghazi and Tobruk and flew low across El Alamein. It was his first visit to the Western Desert since his victorious campaign. The British Embassy said that FieldMarshal Montgomery would stay in Cairo for three or four days, after which he would visit Palestine, Greece, and Italy, studying various military problems connected with the Middle East.

The Egyptian Prime Minister (Sidky Pasha) snnounced that he would meet Field-Marshal Montgomery to-morrow. Reuter says that this engagement has aroused a great deal of interest. It may be purely a courtesy call, but many Egyptians hope that Field-Mar-shal Montgomery’s visit mav ly influence the British •Egyptian Treaty negotiations.

British Army Headquarters in Cairo announced to-day that the Wingate Barracks, near Ceiro, had been handed over to Egypt. The announcement says: “Thus one further link is forged in the implementation of the British policy of evacuation.”
