FIREARMS USED BY CRIMINALS

, INQUIRIES BY POLICE IN BRISBANE BRISBANE, June 11. The police believe that many of the firearms now being used by Sydney criminals come from Brisbane, where they were obtained when thousands of American troops were stationed there. During the war period many service automatics disappeared from the cloakrooms of hotels and restaurants, where American soldiers had left them when the proprietors refused to serve anyone wearing sidearms. Others were sold by Army personnel.

The Queensland Collector of Customs denies that firearms are being smuggled into the country through Brisbane, though he admits the seizure of souvenirs, which Australian soldiers attempted to bring in.
