RAILWAY INQUIRIES
Sir, —During the last few years I have been constantly annoyed by the length of time I am kept waiting when ringing the inquiries department of the Christchurch railway station. I don’t know if this department is understaffed or extremely inefficient, but it is a mystery to me why it takes a minute or more to answer the telephone and then another long period to. find the .man in this or that section to answer the inquiry. Surely a fulltime telephone assistant is necessary in a big business such as the railway station.—Yours, etc., ABDUL. June 5, 1946. [The District Traffic Manager says: ‘‘An attendant is on duty in the inquiry office between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. The volume of business is extremely heavy and delays must inevitably occur owing to lack of sufficient facilities as a result of the department’s inability to obtain equipment, due to war conditions. It is anticipated this will be rectified shortly.”]
