NEW AMERICAN JET ENGINE
WASHINGTON, June 9. The United States Navy has announced that it has developed a revolutionary “ram” jet engine weighing 701 b, developing upwards of 3000 horsepower and capable of driving an aeroplane at 1500 miles an hour. The “ram” jet is sometimes called the “Flying Stovepipe.” It works at high speed only. It will be switched on when rocket power has brought the aeroplane’s speed up to 800 miles an hour. The operating principle is that the engine takes in air compressed by the aeroplane’s speed and tne Injection of fuel causes an explosion resulting in an exhaust thrust providing propulsion similar to the standard jet motor. The “ram” possesses the advantage that it has no moving parts. Tests so far have been limited to sending experimental engines hurtling into the air on their own like a rocket.
