GREYMOUTH ABATTOIR DISPUTE

FURTHER STALEMATE ARISES From Oui Own Keportei GREYMOUTH, June 9. Further difficulties have arisen at the Greymouth Municipal Abattoir and the four of the five former employees, who were re-engaged when applications were considered by the Greymouth Borough Council on Thursday evening, will not recommence work tomorrow, as was generally anticipated. This information has been released by the Mayor of Greymouth (Mr F A. Kitchingham). It was stated that the reason tor this action is that one of the men who resigned was not reappointed, the staff having been cut down by one. It was also stated that the General Labourers’ Union has decreed that the men should not return to their jobs Because of this move. Greymouth now faces a meat shortage. Butchers have stated they can no longer kill stock, and, presumably after the supplies now in the shops have become exhausted, there will be no more unless there are new developments in the meantime. A telegram has been sent by the Greymouth Borough Council to the Minister of Transport, the Hon. J. O’Brien, asking him to intervene in order to maintain a supply of meat for the town.
