TOBACCO GROWERS PLEASED
ESTABLISHMENT OF PRICE BASIS The Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G Sullivan) stated last evening that he had received a communication from the New Zealand Tobacco Growers’ Federation expressing appreciation and thanks for the Government’s action in appointing a special committee to investigate and report on the price position of the tobacco growers of the Dominion The federation’s letter continued: *We appreciate the action you took and ycur general sympathetic attitude towards our requests, which have been made from time to time. The result of the committee’s work has established an acceptable basis on which to calculate future increased costs due to wages rising.” Mr Sullivan said that, although the growers were not completely satisfied with the price which had been arrived at. the industry now felt that the basis which had been worked out for future discussions on price questions could begin from a clearly definite starting point. The industry was now firmly established and was developing steadily year by year, and the Minister expressed the view that progressively greater proportions of New Zealand leaf would be included in New Zealand’s manufactured tobacco.
