HOCKEY
SATURDAY’S MATCHES Slippery grounds made good hockey impossible on Saturday, when the seventh round of the Canterbury Hockey Association’s senior competition was played Following .are the results:—Redcliffs ,5, Technical 3; Trinity 11, Marathon 4; Sydenham A 2, University 1; Selwyn 6. Sydenham B 3.
Following are the points gained by the senior teams to the end of the first round of 'matches:—
TRINITY v. MARATHON The Marathon players set the pace in the early stages, and were three goals up in the first quarter of an hour, first Deakin and then Forsey scoring. A third goal came when a penalty bully was taken in the Trinity circle and a gaol awarded for a breach in the bully. Up to this stage, Trinity was playing far below form; but Glentworth opened the scoring with a clever run, and repeated the performance a few minutes later Then Bowden took a neat pass and evened the scores. Next Wales came in, to put Trinity one goal ahead at half-
Trinity dominated the play in the second half. Glentworth received the ball from McCormick, and increased the lead Then goals came quickly for Trinity, as Thomas scored three, Bowden one, and Glentworth two. Deakin scored again for Marathon in the final stages. Final score: Trinity 11, Marathon 4. Umpires: Messrs W. H. Down and B. Moore. >
REDCLIFFS V. TECHNICAL In a game that produced little firstclass hockey, Redcliffs beat Technical by 5 goals to 3. The first spel] was fairly even, wtih ♦lay moving from end to end. Shortly before half-time, Grimley scored from a corner, giving Redcliffs a lead of one goal at the interval. Redcliffs set the pace early in the second spell. Darling scored two goals in quick succession, and Dale and Pragneil increased the total. Technical finally settled down, and Davidson (2) and Cole netted in the last quarter of an hour making the final score: Redcliffs 5, Technical 3.
Umpires: Messrs W. Perry and E. H. Rogers.
SELWYN v. SYDENHAM B The game between Selwyn and Sydenham B provided the best hockey of the day. Both teams showed good combination and stick work, and although Selwyn won by 6 goals to 3, Sydenham persevered until the end. Selwyn opened the sc-re when Leslie added the final touch to a combined rush by the forwards O’Keefe equalised soon after; out Reece put Selwyn ahead again by tricky stick work. Once again O’Keefe scored and Fairbrother put Sydenham in the lead, making the half-time score: Sydenham B 3. Selwyn 2. Selwyn had all the better of the second naif, and Reece netted from a penalty bully to even the scores. Sydenham unfortunately lost N. Robinson when he twisted a muscle. Selwyn had all the better of the latter part of the game, and Whitford, Reece, and Leslie added to the total. Final score: Selwyn 6, Sydenham B 3. Umpires: Messrs W. Grammer and C. C. Holland. SYDENHAM A v. UNIVERSITY The game between University and Sydenham A was ragged throughout. The
players found the slippery. ground difficult, and mis-hits were frequent. The only score in the first half came when Johnston pushed the ball in after a brief scramble in Sydenham’s goalmouth. Time and again University attackers were in Sydenham’s territory, but without scoring. At half-time .University led by one goal to nil.
Sydenham had all the better of the play in. the second half, Randall, at left halt, keeping the ball well up to the forwards. Midway through the spell Calvert evened the scores. In the last two minutes Calvert again netted, to give Sydenham the victory. Final score: Sydenham A2, University 1. Umpires: Messrs E. Cummins and E. H. Rogers.
