DISTURBANCE IN JERUSALEM
FIGHTING JEWS AND ARABS DISPERSED
(Rec. 8 p.m.) JERUSALEM, June 7. Firing shots into the air. police dispersed about 1000 Jews and Arabs who were fighting a stone battle in the eastern quarters of Jerusalem last night. There were many minor injuries on both sides.
Police, armoured cars, and a platoon of Highlanders with Sten guns guarded the barbed-wire defences round the court in which the trial was held today of Geulah Cohen, an alleged announcer for the Stern Gang’s secret radio
Cohen, aged 20. a pretty Yemenite Jewess, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for operating an illegal radio, and seven years “with special treatment” for unlawful possession of arms. The sentences are to be concurrent.
Cohen told the court that she was not interested : the trial. “I answer nn]v to my people.” she said. She was arrested on February 18 when a flat in Tel Aviv was raided and radio equipment was discovered. Two gunmen shot and wounded a British policeman who was patrolling in the centre of Jerusalem. The incident occurred during the escape of a detained Jew from a doctor’s clinic
Authoritative London sources say there has been no Cabinet decision to the effect that the implementation of the British-American Committee’s recommendations on Palestine would depend on the disarming of illegal armies in Palestine. The denial foil lows a report to that effect appearing in at least one American newspaper.
