ISLAND FRUIT SUPPLIES
CANTERBURY RETAILERS’ VIEWS RETURN OF MAUI POMARE WANTED Recommendations made by the Canterbury Progress League at its last meeting, • that direct shipping of island fruit be made available to the South Island, will receive the full support of the Canterbury Retail Fruiterers’ Association, according to a statement made yesterday by the secretary (Mr J. Adams). The league decided that the support of all interested South Island bodies and persons, consumers and suppliers be co-opted before arranging a deputation to Wellington to seek an improvement in the fruit supplies. “The association is extremely pleased to see the Progress League taking up the matter of fruit carriage from the Pacific Islands,” said Mr Adams. “We assure the league of the utmost support in al] steps which it takes to secure the service to which the South Island is entitled.
“It is pertinent to add here that the Maui Pomare was built expressly for the South Island trade, and now we see the vessel making Auckland her terminal port, apparently indefinitely. What is wanted is the immediate return of the Maui Pomare to the South Island run pending the purchase or building of two new steamers as mentioned by the Progress League. association is communicating its attitude to kindred bodies in other parts of the South Island, from which we feel confident full support will be assured,” Mr Adams added.
