DRIFT TO NORTH ISLAND
“MATTER FOR CONCERN”

“There are two problems which must cause any government concern,” said the Commissioner of Works (Mr E. R. McKillop), speaking at the regional planning conference |n Christchurch yesterday. “One is the drift to the* metropolitan centres and the other is the drift from the South Island to the North Island.” x
Mr McKillop said the Ministry of Works was making an analysis of the basic resources of New Zealand. This work had bfeen begun by the Organisation for National Development, the planning section of which was now attached to the Ministry. A survey was being made of where the people were, where they should be, and what they should do.
The Government could not make people go where they did not want to go or do what they did not want to do. said Mr McKillop, but ultimately it was hoped to develop a logical plan so that trends, if not the actual people, could be directed in the appropriate direction. Britain was giving a lead in this,
