CATCHMENT BOARD ESTIMATES

MR W. MACHIN AGAIN CHAIRMAN

Mr W. Machin was re-elected chairman of the North Canterbury Catchment Board at the annual meeting yesterday afternoon. Professor George Jobberns expressed members appreciation of his management of the board s

affairs. Mr Machin was also congratulated on his election as chairman of the council of the New Zealand School of Agriculture. It was decided to strike a rate of l-40th of a penny in the £ on capital value, the same as last year. Referring to the estimated expenditure of £6730, compared with the estimated income of £6200, Mr Machin said the board’s activities were still at an experimental stage and it was expected that some adjustment would be possible during the year. Further reductions had been made in the estimates of the board’s committees. Administration was now placed at £2079, drainage and rivers control at £2501, and soil conservation and erosion control at £2150.

The board agreed to join the New Zealand Catchment Boards’ Association, which was formed at the recent conference. Mr Machin was congratulated on his election as first chairman.
