North Canterbury Region
GOVERNMENT AND LOCAL BODY The following tabulation of works projects in the North Canterbury region was issued with the Ministry of Works’ plans: Land Development Government works: —Lake Ellesmere, drainage and reclamation of marginal land; Waimakariri river area, extension of flood control and river protection; Rakaia-Waimakariri plains, development works; Waikari-Hawar-den, rural water supply; Ellesmere County, drainage improvements; Lands Department, development schemes; State Forest Service, afforestation, Ashley, Eyrewell, Hanmer, and Balmoral; Russells Flat, drainage; Waimairi County, deepen and improve Styx; Eyre-Cust river diversion and channel regulation; Selwyn river, improvements; Kowhai river, protection. Local body works:—Christchurch Drainage Board, river improvement and stormwater drainage; Waimairi County, forestry, etc. Highways
Government works:—Northcote to Cranford street deviation; KaitunaAkaroa, sealing and reconstruction; improvements Teddington-Purau Bay; Lyttelton to Motukarara, Governor’s Bay deviation; new southern outlet, Blenheim road deviation and highway to Islington; Lyttelton tunnel; reconstruction of Waimakariri bridge, Bennetts highway; overbridge at Kaiapoi; Kaikoura-Waipara reconstruction; Pic-ton-Christchurch highway, Raramai to Paratitahi (tunnel duplication); Lake Lyndon-Arthur’s Pass, improvements; Sockburn and Hornby overbridges; Christchurch-Lyttelton, Ferry road bridge; Red Post-Hanmer, improvements; memorial highway to Harewood. Local body works:—new outlet from city to Sumner. Railways Government works: —Christchurch station and yard rearrangement; partial duplication to Rangiora; SockburnStyx industrial line; Rolleston to Norwood duplication; extensions to Addington Railway workshops. Airways Government work:—Harewood aerodrome, extension and provision of paved runways. Harbours Local body works:—Enlargement of Lyttelton harbour; conversion of Lyttelton port facilities for service by road as well as by rail (contingent on tunnel road scheme). Tramways Local body work: —Christchurch building extensions. Utilities Government works:—Major electric sub-station at Christchurch; sub-sta-tions throughout region. Local body works:—New city reservoir, Huntsbury; Waimairi County, water supply and Belfast riding sewerage; Riccarton Borough, water supply; New Brighton, water and sewerage; Kaiapoi Borough, water and sewerage; Christchurch Drainage Board, sewer extensions; Leeston Town Board, sewerage. Housing Government works:—Christchurch development of sites and erection of houses. Social Services Government works: National Broadcasting Services, studio; St. Helens Home, Christchurch; Canterbury College, chemistry and library block; Lincoln College, new hostel, refectory, library, administration, and renovations; major school projects, metropolitan area; Queen Mary Hospital, Hanmer. extension. Local body works:—Christchurch Hospital, rebuilding; Cashmere Sanatorium. extension; new Cashmere hospital: centennial memorial baths. Public Administration Government works:—Chief Post Office, No. 2 block, Christchurch- Post and Telegraph garage and workshop. Christchurch; Post and Telegraph store and line depot. Christchurch; Post and Telegraph bulk store, Christchurch; new police station and offices, Christchurch; courthouse. Christchurch; new Public Works Department stores depot, Christchurch- departmental buildings. Christchurch. Commercial Government work:—lnternal Marketing Department, new store.
