CIVIL WAR BELIEVED UNLIKELY
ADMIRAL MOUNTBATTEN’S STATEMENT
(Rec. 7 pm.) LONDON, June 5. “Civil war between the Dutch forces ind the Indonesian Republican forces is unlikely when the British troops umpiete evacuation of the Netherlands East Indies at the end of the year ’ said Admiral Lord Louis fountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander in South-East Asia. “The Indonesian forces at present consist of 150,000 men of whom 45.000 are fully armed and equipped. They, however, are not equipped to fight against the organised forces of a European Power, even if they wished to do so. “Java at present is garrisoned by six Dutch and six British battalions. The British are progressively * evacuating positions where they have been based race SJLA.C. assumed control over the area, and are handing them back to the Dutch.” Lord Louis Mountbatten said his forces already had disarmed and concentrated Japanese troops and rescued Dutch internees. Thus they had completed the job to which they had been issigned.
