GERMAN MOTOR SHIP FOR N.Z.
WAR REPARATIONS AWARD LONDON, June 5. New Zealand will receive the 1418ton motor-vessel Gaarden, as part of her war reparations .from Germany. The ship, which was built in Germany in 1944, and seized by Britain in German waters at the time of the capitulation, was awarded to the Dominion by the Inter-Allied Reparations Agency. Mr C. W. Clinkard, New Zealand’s representative on the agency, said that the Gaarden was valued by-the authorities at nearly £50,009. Naval architects, who examined her on behalf of the New Zealand Government, declared that she should be suitable for New Zealand waters, though repairs and renovations would be necessary. These would probably be carried out in Britain.
The ship will be the property of the New, Zealand Government, which may decide to sell her to a' shipping company, but, said Mr Clinkard, no decision has yet been reached.
