IMMIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA
WELCOME PLANNED BY TRADE UNIONS (N4Z. Press Association —Copyright) z (Rec. 7 p.m.) CANBERRA, June 6, “The Australian 1 trade, union movement, through its own organisation and publicity channels, has planned to enlist the aid of every worker in welcoming accepted immigrants,” said the secretary of the Australasian Council of Trade Unions (Mr Albert Monk). He welcomed the statement by the Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) that 35,000 immigrants would probably arrive from Britain next year, and expressed the hope that in two years the full target of 70,000 immigrants a year wquld be reached.
Immigrants would realise that Australia’s immigration programme was not a haphazard affair and that they would be absorbed on a sound vocational and economic basis, said Mr Monk.
