POINT DUTY

Sir, —Your leading article in “The Press” of June 1 commends the chief traffic inspector (Mr Nicholson) for asking motorists to dip their headlamps, especially in wet weather, as visibility is bad. Will the traffic department explain why it is that inspectors are not on point duty when it is raining? Surely if traffic direction is necessary-, in fine weather, it is far more important in rainy weather, when driving conditions are far from good.—Yours, etc., LEONARD G. CHECKLEY. June 4. 1946. [“When the small volume of traffic warrants it, inspectors leave the points, but remain handy to take over the control of the intersection should there be a sufficient increase in the volume of traffic,” said the Chief City Traffic Inspector (Mr C. S. Nicholson), in comment on this letter. "Traffic conditions only, not the weather, have a bearing on the matter.”!
