LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL APPOINTMENT
Sir,—Two months ago the electors of Lyttelton, by a majority of four to one. voted against amalgamation. In this they were supported by the Borough Council. The Borough Council is now about to appoint as a member of t s e council the man responsible for-the amalgamation proposal. This appointment Is to be without an election and without consent of the electors Such a volte face is amazing, and is an insult to the electors of our borough. The members of the Borough Council should openly state if they are now in favour of amalgamation, and plainly say why they are ignoring the wish of the large majority of Lyttelton citizens who do not wish to have anything to do with amalgamation of with am-' algamationists.—Yours,, etc.. ELECTOR. May 29, 1946. [“ln so far as I am concerned I shall certainly advise my council to have the vacancy filled by an election.” was the comment of the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr W. T. Lester,)]
