CORPORAL PUNISHMENT
Sir, —For the benefit of the young girl student who wonders why educational “experts” are so apologetic about the Use of corporal punishment, I would like to say that there are many parents who wonder the same thing. As one who has given both theories a good try-out I can say that my experience is that the rod definitely works, while the soothing dope (in my case) definitely brought trouble—ana lots of it. Unless there is obedience and respect in a young child there is nothing to build good British character upon. Needless to add, the “drive” of the rod, without the “draw” of God’s love, would only frustrate and embitter the young child’s yearning; and this explains why the rod is unpopular—because the Source of Love is unscientific and yields His rewards to faith, not to cunning contrivance by people who hate Him.—Yours, etc., FATHER OF THREE. June 6, 1946.
