W.E.A. CLASSES
BURSARY AVAILABLE IN 1947
Seventeen classes, with a total enrolment of 452, are taking part in the winter session of the Workers’ Educational Association in Christchurch this year, Mr George Manning told the Canterbury district council of the movement at its annual meeting. In addition, there were four classes at the Risingholme and Papanui Community Centres. The class in Esperanto had not yet begun to meet. Weekly lectures at Papkrua prison commenced last Saturday, transport for those speaking being provided by the Christchurch Rotary .Club. For the annual educational trip to Mount Cook, during the King’s Birthday week-end, there were 71 applications for the 40 berths available. Members of classes had been advised that a W.E.A. bursary would be available at Canterbury University College next year. Appreciation of the help received from the National Broadcasting Service was recorded.
The following officers were elected: president, Mr S. Schofield; vicepresidents, Mrs A. Wilson and Mr L. A. Efford; secretary, Mr G. Manning; treasurer, Mr W. Davidson; librarian, Mrs Wilson; auditor, Mr A. A. Bruce; advisory committee on adult education, Messrs Manning, Schofield and Efford; tutorial class committee, Mrs Wilson, Messrs A. A. Dingwall, Efford, and W. J. McCullough; delegate to Dominion council, Mr Schofield.
