Argument.—The first “talkies" to be shown publicly in New Zealand were shown at the Paramount Theatre, Courtenay place, Wellington, on March 6, 1929. The feature film shown on this occasion was "Street Angel, ’ starring Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell. It was a part ‘‘talkie, with synchronised sound. An all talkie Fox Movietone News, a short speech by Bernard Shaw, a short speech by King Alphonso, of Spain, and other all “talkie” short subjects were included on the programme.
