OBITUARY
MR J. S. BUCKLER The death occurred yesterday of Mr James Sydney Buckler, who was known to thousands of people in Christchurch as a “song leader” at community sings held in the city. During the latter part of the depression, he became “song leader" at the Civic Theatre “sings,” held weekly to raise funds for the relief of distress among the unemployed. For the last two years Mr Buckler was associated with the Master Butchers’ War Effort Committee, and conducted community sings held under the committee’s auspices in the Metro Theatre, Sydenham, and at the Civic Theatre. He was also much in demand as a “song leader” at entertainments held at military camps since the outbreak of war. Mr Buckler’s association with the Welcome Club in Christchurch dated almost from its inception. Thousands of pounds were raised for charitable and patriotic purposes at functions where Mr Buckler was song leader. He was also well known in Masonic circles, being a Past Master of Lodge Brighton. Mr Buckler was 53 years of age. He is survived by his widow and three children. MR N. W. KINGDON The death is announced in Australia of Mr Nchomiah Webber Kingdom who had had a long and outstanding connexion with the moat industry, both in New Zealand and in the Commonwealth. Mr Kingdon was the second son of Mr N. S. Kingdon and Mrs M. G. Kingdon. “Kingsdale," Gore. He was born in Cornwall nearly 79 years ago, and came to New Zealand with his parents, landing in New Zealand on New Year’s Day, 1866. His education was received at Courtenay School in Canterbury and after leaving school he worked on his father's, farm in the Courtenay district. Mr N, W. Kingdon started in business in Gore, as a butcher, but sold out in 1890 to take employment with the Southland Frozen Meat Company as foreman of the slaughtering department on the opening of the works at Mataura.
