DAIRY INDUSTRY COSTS
STABILISATION PLAN STATEMENT BY MINISTER EXPECTED From Our Parliamentary Reporter WELLINGTON, June 17. One of the most important features at the annual National Dairy Association conference at Palmerston North next Wednesday will be an address by the Minister of Marketing (the Hon. J. G. Barclay). . It is expected that he will indicate progress made in reaching a basis of discussion between the Government and the dairy industry on the stabilisation question, and it is likely that by then he will be able to announce the requirements of Great Britain in the coming season. The Dairy Board conference at Wellington at the end of last month agreed to the principle of stabilisation, provided that dairy farmers’ costs were reduced to pre-war level. Mr Barclay indicated that he was prepared to arrange for representatives of the Government to meet representatives of the industry to examine any reasonable proposals. This meeting between representatives of the Government and the industry has not taken place yet, and is unlikely to be held before the Palmerston North conference; but the Minister will probably explain to the conference the way in which the question of adjusting farmers’ costs will be tackled.
