CABLE NEWS IN BRIEF

Accidents In U.S. Industry.—.Employment accidents in the United States between July, 1940, and January, 1943, killed 485,000—a higher toll than the Axis inflicted on the American armed forces. An additional 258,000 workers in the same period lost an eye, finger, hand, arm, or leg.—Washington, June 16. Women’s Voluntary Services.—The women’s Voluntary Services are five years old to-day. They have grown from 330,000 at the outbreak of war to a membership of more than 1,000,000. The Minister of Home Security (Mr Herbert Morrison) has paid a tribute to the services, saying: “I think that if I were asked to try to sum up the achievement of the W.V.S., I would say that they consist of 1.000,000 magnificent women who are simply applying the principles of good housekeeping to the job of helping to run their country in its hour of need. They are doing it under the problematic, sometimes heartbreaking, conditions of total war. That is their distinctive and womanly contribution to victory. It is something no man could do and something the whole nation will not forget.” —London, June 17. Memorial at Kalgoorlie.—“The amount of gold won on the Kalgoorlie field from June 15, 1893. to June 15, 1943, totalled 26.172,505 ounces, valued at £150,000,000.” This is the statement inscribed on a tablet unveiled by the Lieutenant-Governor of Western Australia (Sir James Mitchell) at Kalgoorlie, to commemorate the discovery of gold by Paddy Hannan, When gold was discovered the population of Western Australia was 45,000. To-day it is 470,000.—Perth, June 17.
