SOIL CONSERVATION
CATCHMENT AREA FOR NORTH CANTERBURY Steps were being taken by the Dominion Council of Soil Conservation and River pontrol Board to set up a catchment area for the North Canterbury district, the chairman (Mr F. Coop) reported at a meeting of the Wairevya County Council. He added that this would affect the ratepayers of the county, ns the catchment area would include the watersheds of the hills round Lakes Ellesmere and Forsyth. It would be necessary, said Mr Coop, for the council to give these proposals close consideration, as the connecting of the two lakes for a permanent outlet to the sea would certainly involve part, if not the whole of the county, inr the catchment area. fn reply to a question. Mr Coop said he understood soil conservation in the catchment area would probably involve extensive tree-planting on the hills. He did not think that Banks Peninsula beyond the Hill Top would be involved in the scheme. Vessels were now discharging coal for the Auckland Gas Company, the total consignment being more than 2000 tons, or 10 days’ supply, but much of the coal was wet and good results could not be anticipated from it. said Mr R. Worley, manager of the company. on Monday The position this week was that gas-using industries, were being asked to refrain from working overtime, and even with this saving the company would be lucky j to go through the week without inter-1 ruption to the supply.
