Appeal for Jumpers The advisability of taking acceptances lor the Grand National Hurdles with those for other events on the second day of the Grand National Meeting was emphasised by Mr A. Syme at the annual meeting of members of the Canterbury Jockey Club yesterday, when Mr A. S. Elworthy presided. Mr Syme said the present idea of taking acceptances at the same time as those lor the Grand National Steeplechase was merely cantering for bookmakers. Owners had to be considered, and an owner with a horse engaged in both big races should be able to see what form was shown in the steeplechase before being asked to make a payment for the hurdles. Mr Syme also suggested that acceptance fees might well be reduced in jumping races although he was quite in favour of the present scale in flat races with the idea of “keeping out the squibs.* Anything that could be done to assist the owners of jumping horses, as had been done m Wellington and Auckland, would be appreciated. Mr Elworthy assured Mr Syme that the suggestions would be carefully considered in the forming of future programmes. Brilliant Jumper j Treasurer was Iridden yesterday morning by I. Walther over the pony nurdles. It was his first appearance as a jumper at the course, though H. Nurse had given him some preliminaries in his home P3f*“ dock. He gave a great exhibition and he may reach lop class among the hurdlers. Useful Novices Several horses at Riccarton have been sent over the pony hurdles in the last few days, among them being Garonne, Synthetic,. May Ling, and Beefeater. All of them, except Garonne, are novices, but they are on the way to becoming proficient jumpers. New Jumping Ground The schooling hurdles at Riccarton have been shifted to fresh positions. This is done periodically, as the ground near the obstacles becomes cut up as a result of horses jumping. Jockeys to Travel ' ■ , . C. T. Wilson, R. Register, R. Beale, and S. J. Green are booked to leave to-day for the North Island, to ride at the Manawatu meeting. Strong Jumping Team The three jumpers in S. Barr’s team are all In good order. The veteran steeplechaser Erinatlon, who had a short rest when he came home from Auckland, is now In preparation for Trentham. The other two, Edward and Trench Coat, are novice steeplechasers, being got ready for the South Canterbury Hunt meeting., Visitors Arrive Mr F. C. Christie arrived at Riccarton this week from South Canterbury, bringing Prince Shad, also Old Glory, a maiden three-year-old. who had two races ear;y in the season. They will be prepared here for their trip to Trentham, after which they will return to remain for the Grand National meeting. The stable jockey,K. Wilson, is making a good recovery from the effects of his fall at Wlngatul. For Trentham The following horses from Riccarton have been nominated for the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting next month:—Fur Coat, Hunting Charm. Pallid, Denary, Amorlad, Arctic Dawn, Dash o’ Dink, Faultless, Valantua, Erinatlon, Taxpayer, Last Effort, Sham Boy, and Lord Advocate. In addition, more than 20 horses have been nominated from other training centres In the North Island. The list for two days totals 601, compared with 561 last year. Doubtful Prospect The Bulandshar mare, Deolall, has been working well since she was removed to Trentham and with yielding ground to favour her, she is quite sound so far. She is to race at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting next month, but her trainer says that if she shows any signs of becoming unsound again he will retire her rather than risk a breakdown. Deolali has not raced since the spring, when she ran second to Gayest Son in the Peart Handicap at Trentham. Wellington Racing Club
