CHRISTCHURCH BRANCH At the; monthly meeting of th> Christchurch branph o| the National Colmcil pt Women, five sub-commit-tees were appointed to deal with the subjects of housing 1 and pensions: edu--cation—and-child and commodities; welfare and social questions; and reconstruction and Tvomen s place in civic and government admin istration. In future questions coming before the branch relating to any of these subjects will be submitted to the sub-committee concerned, who will make the necessary investigations and suggest what steps might be taken. A good deal of discussion took place on the question of married women in employment, and the effect it has on the children. It was stated thai several play-time and nursery centres nan been opened for small children, but an even more urgent problem was that which relates to the older school children whose mothers and fathers are working all day, It was argued that whereas no one has the right to prevent any married woman from becoming a wage-earner, all have the right to protect the growing generation, and i order to try to meet the situation a sub-committee was set up to go into the matter and report to the next m M^s S M. G. Havelaar, Mesdames W. Mackay, C. Barrel], J Lorimer. W. H Cattell, F. J Grigg, R. D. Neale, C. Crow]Gy and Miss M. McLean were elected to the Dominion committee and to represent the brench at the Dominion conference to be held in Wellington in September. . . A report on the recent commission into the milk supply Christchurch was laid on the table. The point was emphasised that the Minister of Supply has the power over-night to bring down a bill to make pasteurisation universal without a referendum of tee people. The need for vigilance was urged on the part, of those who are opposed topasteurisatioiu^
