VEGETABLE GROWING
Sir,—As vegetable growers will be unable to recover costs of production on present indexed prices, the consuming public should be made aware that there will be a serious shortage of fresh vegetables in the spring if the Government persists with its pernicious system of contract growing. Growers all over New Zealand desire to co-operate in an effort for increased production; but this will only be made possible by an immediate revision of indexed prices which will ensure an adequate return to the grower. With an election pending, it would appear to discerning producers that the Government’s proposals constitute electioneering tactics, wherein the growers have been sacrificed for the potential vote of the consumer; but the consumer must realise that with the elimination of small holdings, the introduction of State farms will mean a further drain on the Consolidated Fund.—Yours, etc., . „„ G. W. WALSH. June 9, 1943.
