NEW ZEALAND SPENDS £144,872 COST OF ESTABLISHMENTS AND STAFFS The total cost to New Zealand this year of being represented by a Mia- '. ister at Washington and High Com- , missioners in London, Ottawa, and Canberra, is estimated at £144,072. Last year, according to the estimates of the Department of External Affairs, £97,821 was voted for expenses at Washington, London, and Ottawa, and £91,078 was spent. The cost of maintaining the New,’ Zealand Legation in Washington is / estimated at £39,979 this, year. Last year £33,849 was voted, and £35,485. was spent. The principal item is the sum of £11,635 for location allowances to the staff. The Minister's salary is £2OOO, and the first secretary receives £IOOO. Salaries of 18 other members of the staff range;; from £196 to £715, and account for ,; £B3BI. These include a chauffeur at£s66 and secretaries who are paid salaries ranging from £470 to £716. ~ Postages, telegrams, cablegrams, phones, and , toll calls op £3351 was spent last year account Jay for £4850. The sum of £3400 is to belif spent this year on advertising, photo-, graphs, books, newspapers, other pub-. ' lications, and publicity. This year the cost of maintaining ; the High Commissioner’s Office in, London is estimated at £77,146. The ,; sum of £55,965 was voted last year and £62,400 was spent. The salaries , of 135 members of the staff ranging from £65 to £765 account for £31,702, - and the salaries of the High Commissioner, secretary, and the assistant secretary and finance officer are set down at £2OOO, £1055, and £950 respectively.’ 'Rent, rates, taxes, and insurance, part of which are recoverable, are estimated at £12,500. Last year £237 was spent on advertising, photographs, books, newspapers, other publications, and publicity, and £250 ha» been allotted this year. A vote of £18,457 was made last year for the establishment of the High Commissioner’s Office in Ottawa, and £6324 was spent. This year the esti* mate is £14,512. The High Commissioner’s salary is £ISOO, and the salaries of a staff of eight ranging from . £202 to £750 account for £4699. Location allowances are set down at £4138; This year £2OO has been allotted for advertising, publications, and publicity. The new vote in the estimates is £11,965 for the establishment of a High Commissioner’s Office in Canberra. The High Commissioner’s sal- ’ ary is £ISOO, the salaries of a staff of five ranging from £234 to £685 , account for £IB9O, and location allowances are fixed at £I7OO. The sum of ’ £2400 is allotted for the rental of an ~ office and official residence and furnishings and office equipment,
