GROWING VEGETABLES BY CONTRACT

OPPOSITION OF AUCKLAND GROWERS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 8. Strong opposition to the Government's proposals for growing basic vegetables by contract was voiced by a large and representative meeting of Auckland commercial growers last night. After hearing an outline of the scheme by Mr Greig, Agriculture Department, and Mr R. G. C. Flitch, Internal Marketing Division, the growers rejected an invitation to appoint an advisory committee. Mr Greig said vegetables were one of a few groups that had risen in price since stabilisation began, and unless control existed the entire plan might be upset. During the last year surpluses from State farms had been placed on the market, and the State reserved the right to market surpluses again after July 1. “We must plan for over-production,” said Mr Greig, who added that surpluses would be used for dehydration and other by-products. It was hoped to inaugurate the contract system on July 1. Several speakers declared that if the Government wanted contracts, prices must show a margin of 10 per cent, above production costs.
