THE LATE MR W. HAYWARD
FUNERAL HELD YESTERDAY The funeral of Mr W. Hayward, who died in Christchurch on Saturday, was held yesterday. Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Roman Catholic Cathedral, Barbadoes street, where the celebrant was the Rev. Father T. Hanrahan, assisted by representatives ot the clergy of all city and suburban parishes. In a short panegyric, Father Hanrahan described Mr Hayward as a man who was ever ready to be of service to his church and to the community. , ~ . T The service at the graveside in Unwood Cemetery was also conducted by Father Hanrahan. The funeral was attended by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr E. H. Andrews), the Mayoress (Miss E. Couzins), the Hon. J. K. Archer, M.L.C., representatives of the Christchurch Tramway Board, the City Council, the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, the New Zealand Trotting Association, the Metropolitan Trotting Club, the Canterbury Park Trotting Club, the Canterbury Employers’ Association. the Christchurch Citizens’ Association, the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association. the Christchurch branch of the National Party (represented by the chairman, Mr T. N. Gibbs), and the Christchurch National Club (of which Mr Hayward was president), and of the many local body, philanthropic, sporting and commercial interests with which Mr Hayward was associated. There was also a large attendance of the public at the funeral.
