PENSIONS

Sir, —We have just been reading of the increases to be made in pensions and notice that widows without children are to receive £3 a week. Why is this pension given at all? Single women, often older, hampered with rheumatism, afflicted with deafness, or weakened by operations, are not given any help until they can get the age benefit. Pensions should not be given as rewards for rank and achievement, but according to a woman's need and her ability to earn; and- all class distinction should be done away with, especially since the last war, when so many young single men were killed, with the result that many young women had no chance of becoming wives. Other girls have slight physical defects or disfiguratimi which are a handicap to earning a living. No pension for them —they have never had a wedding ring. Stupidity and cruelty could go no further. —Yours, 6tc ’ JUSTICE FOR ALL. June 8. 1943.
