ASHBURTON T.C. HARDY OAK’S WIN ACROPOLIS SUCCEEDS IN SAPLING STAKES The main races provided the highlights of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting. After being slow away in the All Aged Stakes, O. E. Hooper was content to trail the field with Hardy Oak until four furlongs from home, when he gathered in his field to have the race In safe keeping with a furlong to go. When the field settled down Volusta had charge from Battle Colours and Springfield Globe. Springfield Globe led past the mile post closely followed by Bronze Eagle, Volusta, Battle Colours, with Countless handy. Once into the straight Hardy Oak easily accounted for Bronze Eagle and Countless, and recorded an easy win. Patiently driven by R. B. Berry, Acropolis justified his favouritism in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes. He was not prominent in the early stages, but he gradually made up ground to be handy with three furlongs to go. In the straight he finished on strongly after withstanding challenges from Paul Collette, Plunder Bar, and Scottish Emperor. In spite of the constant drizzle, which marred proceedings from the spectators’ point of view the totalisator handled £45,615, against £41,627 on' the corresponding day last year. TROTTING NOTES

Change of Luck The New Brighton trainer, G. Cameron, had a change of luck at tire Ashburton meeting, both his successful candidates, Worthy Addition and Sports Guide, paying double-figure dividends.

Light Brigade Mr J. R. McKenzie's American importation, Light Brigade, registered a good performance to win the Longtaeach Handicap. By Volomite from Spinster, he brings a wealth of blood lines to New Zealand, and it will be surprising if breeders do not take advantage of him in the coming season. A Disappointment Once again Traverse disappointed his supporters. A bad break at the start settled his chance in the Longbeach Handicap. Pleasant Guy Usually a quick beginner, Pleasant Guy dwelt at the start of the Winter Handicap. She pulled her way to the front with a mile covered, but weakened over the final stages. On this performance Pleasant Guy appears likely as a sprint winner. Loyal Friend Although he appeared on the burly side, Loyal Friend attracted attention oy his effort in the Acton Handicap. Like Royal Worthy, he Is trained at Methven by Mr A. J. Wilson. Royal Worthy. In spite of breaks, won the Mayfield Handicap comfortably from what proved to be a weak field. Sale at Epsom A filly by Indianapolis from Lady Gertrude. dam of Hilda Potts, was purchased at a sale in Auckland last week by Mr G. J. Barton, of Dunedin, for 180 guineas. Other sales of trotting stock were:—Filly by Indianapolis from a Great Parrish mare, 65 guineas; gelding by Jewel Pointer from a Great Parrish mare, 37} guineas; Connenora, by Travis Axworthy —Millie de Oro, 35 guineas. Rain Mars Holiday at Rangiora.— The rain which fell yesterday marred the holiday at Rangiora. Usually the, beaches at Waikuku and Woodend are well patronised on such a holiday, but yesterday they bore a neglected appearance, most people preferring to remain at home.

Acreman was left at the post, and, took no part in the race. Gold Spot. Kanui te Pal, Comrle, and Smiling Thru fell in the Great Northern Steeplechase. Sale at Auckland

At a thoroughbred sale at Auckland last week the top price was 250 guineas for the brood mare Bay of Islands, by Te Monanul from Gazclla. Palustre, by Tea Tray from Marshlands, brought 240 guineas. Both mares were stinted to Foxbridge. The former Riccanon filly, Pennywhistle, by Mypsotis from Pennywise, was sold for 200 guineas. Other sales were:—Hunting Maid 125gns, Heroic Star. lOOgns, Ernette lOOgns, Tea Money 85gns, Fox Queen 65gns, and Flying Drake 60gns.

Open Sprinters at Wlngatul Fleet Street, now eight years old, added to his consistent record in the southern part of the South Island by an impressive win In the Members’ Handicap at Wingatui last Saturday. He was in the middle of live field rounding the home turn, and did not actually become prominent until the run home had been entered. He then made a fast run to go past the leaders, Prince Shad and Royal Chorus, and won fairly comfortably from Sing Sing and Dark Olga. The two lastnamed were responsible for- excellent efforts as both were slow to move off. Dark Olga being in last place In the first furlong. Both were finishing faster tlvan the winner, and no doubt would have beaten him with a little further to go. Night Pal also spoilt his chance in this race by failing to get away on terms. He was well back early, and did not improve his position to any extent. Two Failures

St. Cloud was a surprising first choice for tlve Members’ Handicap at Wlngatul, but In spite of having ground and distance to suit her. she failed to show any promise of winning, and finished in fifth place. Mauretania, In the same race, was one of the leaders Inside the final furlong, but as on the first day failed to carry on.

T nf£i* PrAdfiPric Prince Shad Ivad 8-6 on the first day at Wingatul and, with the hurdle horseman, R. Register, in the saddle, carried 6lb over-weight. He had the same impost last Saturday, but as Register had in the meantime reduced his weight, he did not have to carry any extra poundage. The Paper Money gelding showed marked improvement, as after being slow early, he raft round the field past the home turn, and was in first place when the straight was reached. He evidently showed signs of tiring early in the run home, as his rider had the whip on him a good way from the post. Prince Shad, however, held on well In tlv? circumstances, and was beaten for third money only in the last stride. He has only to keep sound to return soon to the winning list.

Not Sustained Lincoln occupied a new role for him by being one of the leaders for the early part of the concluding event at Wingatul, but he did not hold his position very long. He was moving into the barrier when the tapes went up. and was first into his stride, a lucky move that no doubt accounted for his unusual prominence. Lincoln is a good-looking gelding by Foxbridge from Love Story by Romeo, but has been a very expensive proposition in the last 12 months. Middle Distance Hacks The Stonyhurst-brcd Courtdress. a brother to Night Dress, showed a little of his best form in the final event at Wlngatui, and the manner in which he completed his task to run Paladeo to a neck margin suggested he may yet win some good middle distance races. Paladeo’s win was his first since he was successful at Oamaru last March. He is a bold galloper, but has not been very consistent in his races.
