VICTORY TOWN HALL FOR KAIKOURA
♦ COUNTY CHAIRMAN’S * SUGGESTION A suggestion that the county should have a town hall and county chambers to mark the occasion of victory was made by Mr F. J. Monk, upon his reelection as chairman of the Kaikoura County Council for the twelfth consecutive year. Mr Monk thought that, if bonds were issued, a town hall could be erected without burdening the ratepayers. The return of men from overseas would make the problem of rehabilitation an important one, and it was for the county councils and other local bodies to help to the best of their ability by putting local works in hand, said Mr Monk. The Government would be spending £2OOO on a reservoir on the peninsula, continued Mr Monk, and the fact that there were some splendid building sites in the locality should be kept in view. Councillors agreed that the proposals for the town hall reservoir and the clearing of Lyell Creek were excellent. and that they would help the Government considerably as first steps in rehabilitation in the district.
