WATER FOR RICCARTON
Sir,—Here are the pros and cons of the suggested water scheme for Riccarton summed up. Benefits: ratepayers on three miles of roadways receive improved fire fighting facilities. Objections: A. Approximately 25 miles of Riccarton streets, so 88 per cent, of ratepayers get absolutely no benefit. £ Cast iron wanted for war purposes. Riccarton proposes using three miles of six-inch mains. C. Labour. Men urgently required for farms to produce necessary foodstuffs. Riccarton would divert these men to non-essential work. D. Finance. The citizens of New Zealand are being urged to save every penny of their ready cash. Riccarton would go one better—or worse —and actually proposes borrowing to spend. Finally, why not get this war won and then—if ratepayers approve —let the Mayor plan for the reticulation of the whole borough and provide possibly much-needed work for returned men?— Yours, etc., 20 YEARS A RATEPAYER.
