UNIVERSITY BEATEN BY SELWYN In the brightest match of the season Selwyn beet University A by 3 goals to 2. The teams were evenly matched and the game swung from end to end throughout the whole game, and at no time could any player afford to let up. O. Whitford, in the backs, and T, Burtt, at centre half, were outstanding for Selwyn, Burtt playing a remarkably beady game. His stick work and ball control saved his side repeatedly. The Selwyn forward line, was not particularly impressive as a line, and there was an inclination to bunch at times. R. Molr, on the left wing, put in some useful runs, and A. Clapshaw displayed clever scorirg ability. In the University team C. V. Walter proved a tower of strength and was the pivot of most movements. Waters and Mann made a good pair on the right, which was the main attack. E. Bennett went Into the backs, but was evidently out of place. J. Martin played a solid game throughout. TRINITY v. UNIVERSITY B Playing a hard, bustling game throughout, Trinity proved too good for University B and won by 4 goals to 1. Trinlly had the better of the game in the first spell, but over-eagerness led to offside play and chances of scoring were thrown away. Midway through the spell Allen finished a combined raid in netting with a snap shot. University endeavoured to equalise, but White and Wilson set up a strong defence, and at half-time Trinity was leadirg by 1 goal to 0. University improved early in the second half and Steven equalised. The reverse spurred Trinity to further efforts and Allen scored from a penalty corner. A series of rpinor casualties led to several stoppages and Kendon had to retire. Trinity was playing better hockey and Allen was again successful, and near the close of the game Allen won a penalty bully.}. The final score was: Trinity 4, University 1. SYDENHAM v. TECHNICAL Although Technical rallied in the final stages of the game against Sydenham and score 1 two goals in quick succession, Sydenham had gained too great a lead and won by 4 goals to 3. The Sydenham team, which was promoted to take the place of the Army -team, was strengthened by the inclusion of R. Peacock, who played at the top of his form and broke up the Technical attack repeatedly. Sydenhapi played better hockey than Tecnnlcal, their combination and positional play being of a high standard. Technical was inclined to bunch in the forwards instead of passing the ball about. Technical scored early when • Moore nipped in to collect a pass from Kiddey. After several misses with scoring shots the Sydenham forwards found the net, Small, O’Keefe, and Peacock registering before half-time, when the score was; Sydenham 3. Technical 1. Sydenham continued to play the better passing game and O’Keefe increased the lead shortly after the resumption of play. Technical stuck to the task of reducing the lead and In the final stages Moore succeeded in winning a penalty bully and Thomson netted from a penalty corner. Final score: Sydenham 4. Technical 3.
