FRIENDLY SOCIETIES
* SOLDIER MEMBERS’ PROBLEMS DISCUSSED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 4. A deputation representing the Dominion council of Friendly Societies has placed before the Hon. W. Nash and the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer several problems affecting soldier members of friendly societies. The proposed reinsurance of funeral risk in respect of soldier members, also the proposed payment of their friendly society contributions from the Soldiers’ Financial Assistance Board, and the question of the deduction of lodge sick-pay from the economic and other pensions were discussed with Mr Nash, who agreed to place the matters before Cabinet. The annual conference, attended by representatives of nearly all friendly societies from different parts of the Dominion, also discussed the reduced membership since the operation of the Social Security Act, medical fees charged by certain doctors in excess of amounts prescribed by the Social Security Act, and the operation of credit unions by friendly societies. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr F. E. Talbot. Christchurch; immediate past-president. Mr A. W. Jones, Invercargill; senior vicepresident, Mr A. L. Williams, Petone: junior vice-president. Mr O. Jacobsen, Christchurch; secretary and treasurer, Mr L. J. Retallick, Wellington.
