UNITED GRAND LODGE OF FREEMASONS
EARL OF HARBWOOD INSTALLED’ LONDON, June 2. The King installed his brother-in-law, the Earl of Harewood, as Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England at Freemasons’ Hall. The Earl of Harewood succeeds the Duke of Kent, who was installed in July, 1939, and he is the first Grand Master not of Royal birth since 1874. Addressing the Grand Master after his installation, His Majesty said: “We cannot expect our difficulties of the last few years to end with the war. There will be further problems for solution. Many of our lodges are situated in countries at present occupied by the enemy. They will have to be re-established. There are also countries where the Freemasonry has been dissolved or has ceased to operate. This is a sad phase in the history of these constitutions and, when the circumstances allow, I have no doubt that the world’s Mother Grand Lodge will gladly offer its help to restore the craft, which will be strengthened by the adversity through which it has passed.”
