EARLIER CLOSING HOURS ON FRIDAY

a TEMUKA PROGRESS LEAGUE’S PROPOSAL The advisability of closing retail shops at an earlier hour than 9 o’clock on Friday nights was discussed at a meeting of the Temuka Progress League. The idea received favourable comment from members present, and it was left to the retailers’ section of the league to go into the matter. The chairman (Mr H. B. Strange) said that other towns had adopted the idea of earlier closing on the late night. Stocks were becoming harder to procure, and, personally, he favoured the idea. Mr T. L. Bussell said that Temuka should follow Waimate and Fairlie and close at 8 p.m. during the winter months. People went to the pictures at 7.30 p.m. and there was little business done after 8 o’clock, he added.
