WITHHOLDING OF HONEY
I ♦ ( TARANAKI BEEKEEPERS’ j CONDEMNATION 1 "The Press” Special Service ' NEW PLYMOUTH, June 2. ' The action of the executive of the Taranaki branch of the National Bee- « keepers’ Association in condemning 1 Canterbury beekeepers for with- { holding supplies of honey was en- ‘ dorsed at the annual meeting of the branch at Hawera. The meeting, re- { presenting a holding of 4800 colonies 1 of bees, decided to request the Gov- ■ ernment “to take firm action against * defaulters.’’ ( . The meeting passed another resolu- 1 tion supporting “the present orderly i marketing scheme" and expressing willingness to co-operate with the in- 1 ternal marketing division. Surprise s was expressed that the South --Tara* 1 naki executive of the New~Z£alanH ' Farmers’ Union should support the iic- 1 ti6n of the Canterbury beekeepers ' without obtaining information on the 1 matter. t The last season, following on the i worst in the history of the industry, was well below the average in most districts, although some producers had moderate crops, said the president, Mr H. R. Penny, in his annual report The limited supply of honey necessitated more drastic Government control than was expected. The commandeering of 70 per cent, of the honey production was held by ( members to be necessary in view of the requirements of the armed forces < and the poorness of recent seasons. i and it was stated that the only dis- : satisfaction likely to arise in Tara- . naki under existing conditions would be if members complied with the re- : gulations and others who did not were • allowed to go scot free. j
