LINEN FLAX
MEETING OF ELLESMERE GROWERS A well-attended meeting of Ellesmere linen flax growers, convened by the Farmers’ Union and held at Leeston, decided in favour of continuing the scheme adopted last season under which 5 per cent, of the returns had been held back to cover losses to growers. It was also decided to return to growers the balance of last season’s levies, only two or three applications for assistance having been received. An address was given by Mr J. E. H. McGrath, of Oxford, district Representative on the central committee., who was again nominated for the position. Mr McKay, of the Department of Agriculture, stated that Ellesmere farmers were being asked to sow 700 acres in linen flax. Up to the present a little more than 400 acres had been secured, but he was hopeful of securing the remaining acreage. Messrs R. T. McMillan, W. R. Fraser, and W. H. Parkin, the local mill factory manager, the Fields Officer of the Department of Agriculture, and officers of the Ellesmere Farmers’ Union, were appointed an advisory committee.
